Detailed Description

Business Impact:

This vulnerability is present in all supported versions of Microsoft Outlook. The vulnerability was caused by improper verification of the file extension of an attachment in a specially crafted e-mail message, and could be leveraged for code execution when the user attempts to open the attachment. It was privately disclosed to Microsoft, allowing them to provide a patch in coordination with the public disclosure of the vulnerability. At the time of publication, no one had yet published proof-of-concept exploit code nor were there any reports of in-the-wild exploitation.

Technical Description:

Microsoft Office Outlook could allow a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code on the system, caused by a vulnerability regarding improper verification of the file extension of file attachments.  By persuading a victim to open an attachment in a specially crafted e-mail message, a remote attacker could exploit this vulnerability to execute arbitrary code on the system with the privileges of the victim.

Remediation:

A patch was made available on July 13, 2010.
