Detailed Description

Business Impact:

X-Force Research feels it is of medium risk overall due to the complexity in creating an exploit. Office 2003 documents as an exploitation vector have typically been quite significant, especially in targeted attacks. From the targeted attack perspective, the risk of exploitation is quite high—even though multiple steps are required.

*CVSS Base Score: 9.3
  Access Vector: Network
Access Complexity: Medium
Authentication: None
Confidentiality Impact: Complete
Integrity Impact: Complete
Availability Impact: Complete
Adjusted Temporal Score: 6.9
  Exploitability: Unproven
Remediation Level: Official-Fix
Report Confidence: Confirmed
Affected Products:

The vulnerable library is named accwiz.dll, and ships with Microsoft Access, a common component application of premium Office 2003 versions.

Affected versions:

X-Force has tested accwiz.dll to version 11.0.8164.0 to be vulnerable. In other words, Microsoft Access 2003 and earlier feature vulnerable versions of this ActiveX control..

Technical Description:

When loading persisted data through the ATL abstraction layer into a COM control this DLL exports, custom, non-ATL code that interprets this data can be abused to free an object while retaining its pointer. Later, the vulnerable class object containing the stale pointer will attempt to call an invalid release method offset from the stale pointer. While difficult, reliable exploitation is possible.

Remediation:
