Detailed Description

Business Impact:

This issue affects older versions (5.0, 5.1 and 6.0) of Microsoft Internet Information Services when the FTPd service is installed and enabled (neither Windows XP nor Windows Server 2003 install it by default).

Vulnerabilities affecting web servers are becoming increasingly lucrative targets for attackers.  In addition to compromising the targeted web server, these attacks are used to plant other exploits, malware, or redirects to malicious web servers essentially turning a trusted domain into an attack center for the true target: endpoints (the customers and employees that use the target website).

Patches were not available at the time of publication.  They were released on October 13, 2009.  Customers that have this service installed or enabled should also deploy protection as described in the ISS Coverage section as soon as possible.

Affected Products: For a full list of affected versions, see XFDB reference below.
Technical Description: Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) is vulnerable to a stack-based buffer overflow, caused by improper bounds checking by the FTPd service. By sending an overly long NLST command, a remote attacker could overflow a buffer and execute arbitrary code on the system with elevated privileges or cause the application to crash.
Remediation: Patches were made available on October 13, 2009.  See References for details.

1.0 Initial publication.
1.1 Clarified that on 6.0, the issue only results in a DoS and not remote code execution.
1.2 Microsoft released a patch, so updated References, Remediation, CVSS, and Business Impact sections.
