Technical Description: Windows Media Player is vulnerable to a heap-based buffer overflow due to improper handling of malformed Advanced Stream Redirector (.ASX) files. These files are used to allow Windows Media Player to retrieve content from a specific location. An attacker could use a malformed .ASX to trigger the overflow condition resulting in arbitrary code execution. This attack will most likely come in the form of a malicious .ASX hosted on a website, but may also come as an e-mail attachment or use other vectors.
