Description:

Gaim is vulnerable to a buffer overflow in the Jabber plug-in module. A remote attacker could overflow a buffer and cause the Gaim client to crash or possibly execute code on the system.

Remedy:

For Red Hat Linux:
Upgrade to the latest Gaim package, as listed below. Refer to RHSA-2002:098-14 for more information. See References.

Red Hat Linux: 7.1: 0.59-0.7.1 or later
Red Hat Linux: 7.2: 0.59-0.7.2 or later
Red Hat Linux: 7.3: 0.59-0.7.3 or later

For Mandrake Linux 7.1, 7.2, 8.0, 8.1, 8.2, and Corporate Server 1.0.1:
Upgrade to the latest versions of Gaim (0.59.1-1.1mdk or later), as listed in MandrakeSoft Security Advisory MDKSA-2002:054 : gaim. See References.

For other distributions:
