Mandrake Linux passwd program used with PAM authentication fails to use md5 encryption

Description:
The passwd program in Mandrake Linux uses weaker than expected encryption when used with PAM (Pluggable Application Module) authentication files. The PAM files used with the passwd program in Mandrake Linux do not support md5 encryption. If a password is changed after installation or a new account is created, the new password would not use md5 encryption.

Remedy:
Upgrade to the latest version of passwd (0.64.1-9.1 or later), as listed in MandrakeSoft Security Advisory MDKSA-2001:091 : passwd. See References.
