Firebird INTERBASE environment variable buffer overflow
| firebird-interbase-bo (11977) |
Description:
Firebird is a cross-platform embedded database program, developed by SourceForge. Firebird versions 1.0 and 1.0.2 running on Linux and BSD platforms are vulnerable to a buffer overflow, caused by insufficient bounds checking by the gds_inet_server, gds_drop, and gds_lock_mgr binaries. By passing an overly long INTERBASE environment variable to Firebird, a local attacker could overflow a buffer and execute arbitrary code on the system with elevated privileges, possibly root.
Platforms Affected:
- FirebirdSQL, Firebird 1.0
- FirebirdSQL, Firebird 1.0.2
- Gentoo, Linux
Remedy:
No remedy available as of October 11, 2008.
Consequences:
