Oracle9i Application Server DAV_PUBLIC format string denial of service
| oracle-appserver-davpublic-dos (11330) |
Description:
Oracle9i Application Server is vulnerable to a denial of service attack, caused by a format string vulnerability in the ap_log_error() function in the mod_dav module, which is accessible using the DAV_PUBLIC directory. A remote attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending a specially-crafted URL request to the DAV_PUBLIC directory to cause denial of service against the affected server or execute arbitrary commands on the server.
Note: This vulnerability may also affect other platforms that include a mod_dav module that permits user-supplied strings to be passed to the ap_log_error() function.
Platforms Affected:
- Oracle, Application Server 9.0.2
Remedy:
Upgrade to the latest version of Oracle9i Application Server (9.0.3 or later), or apply the workaround for this vulnerability, as listed in Oracle Security Alert #52. See References.
Consequences:
Denial of Service

- CVE-2002-0842: Format string vulnerability in certain third party modifications to mod_dav for logging bad gateway messages (e.g. Oracle9i Application Server 9.0.2) allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a destination URI that forces a 502 Bad Gateway response, which causes the format string specifiers to be returned from dav_lookup_uri() in mod_dav.c, which is then used in a call to ap_log_rerror().
