Description:

WinRAR is vulnerable to a buffer overflow, caused by improper handling of long file extensions when opening archives. By creating a file archive containing a compressed file with an overly long file extension, a local attacker could overflow a buffer and execute arbitrary code on the system with elevated privileges, once the archived file is opened.

Platforms Affected:

  • WinRAR, WinRAR 3.10 and prior

Remedy:

Upgrade to the latest version of WinRAR (3.11 or later), available from the RARLAB Web site. See References.
