HP Procurve HTTP reset request denial of service

hp-procurve-http-reset-dos (10172) The risk level is classified as LowLow Risk

Description:

HP Procurve 4000M switches are vulnerable to a denial of service attack. The HP Procurve 4000M switch fails to check for proper authentication when processing device_reset? commands sent to a stacked switch. A remote attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending multiple device_reset? commands using HTTP requests to the "Commander" switch in a stack to cause the switch to continuously reset, which would deny services to legitimate users.

Platforms Affected:

  • HP, ProCurve Switch 4100M C.09.13

Remedy:

Upgrade to firmware version C.09.16 or later, as listed in Hewlett-Packard Company Security Bulletin HPSBUX0209-219. See References.

Consequences:

Denial of Service

  • CVE-2002-1147: The HTTP administration interface for HP Procurve 4000M Switch firmware before C.09.16, with stacking features and remote administration enabled, does not authenticate requests to reset the device, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service via a direct request to the device_reset CGI program.
