Symantec Norton AntiVirus POPROXY username denial of service

nav-poproxy-username-dos (10085) The risk level is classified as LowLow Risk

Description:

Norton AntiVirus has a POP3 proxy service (POPROXY), which is used to check incoming messages for viruses before they arrive in a user's mailbox. The POPROXY service in Norton AntiVirus 2001 and possibly other versions are vulnerable to a denial of service attack. If an email client is configured to log into the Norton POP3 proxy with an overly long username that consists of multiple /localhost entries, an attacker could cause the system to consume 100% of the CPU resources and cause the POPROXY service to eventually crash. The POPROXY service must be restarted before the affected user would be able to check their mail.
