DNS forms the basic "directory service" for the Internet. All computers on the Internet are identified by their IP address, but humans use names instead. DNS, acts like a phone-book to lookup the number for a given name. For example, when a user accesses http://www.example.com, the DNS system might resolve that to http://192.0.2.17. - Zone Transfers
