ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) is the technology that ISPs use as their backbones (instead of technologies like Ethernet or frame relay.

ATM is a compromise solution. Rather than routing bits like T1 or routing full frames like Ethernet, ATM is based upon 53-byte "cells". This allows IP packets to traverse the backbone with less overhead than traditional technologies, but is more flexible than traditional circuit-switched networks like T1.
