A unique number that identifies each machine on the Internet. Example: 192.0.2.111 An IP address is like a phone number. When your computer is on-line, it has one of these addresses. When you talk to a website, that site also has an IP address. All communication is between these addresses.
However, when you visit a website such as http://www.networkice.com your computer invisibly looks up the name "www.networkice.com" and finds its IP address. The process is similar to looking up somebody's name in the phone book to get their telephone number.
