E-mail worms spread themselves through a user's e-mail box. These worms usually come as an attachment. The attachment is either an executable (.exe), Word document (.doc) with embedded macros, or VisualBasic Scripting (.vbs). Alternately, the worms may consist of .html messages with embedded scripting macros. The era of major e-mail worms began with the Melissa Virus of February 1999. Another major outbreak was the ILOVEYOU during May of year 2000. Variants of these worms flourish for a while then die down as people install filters and users learn about the dangers of attachments.
