The yppasswd system allows users to change their passwords on systems managed by YP. For most users, this means that it chagnes their network password.Users will use a client program called yppasswd. Normally, this program will be called automatically by scripts on the system, so when the user changes their passwords, they may not be aware that this program is being called.
The server that maintains the YP/NIS database runs the program yppasswdd (the yppasswd daemon). It receives remote requests from users to change their passwords.
These programs have been replaced by the newer nispasswd subsystem. They are included only for backwards compatibility. It should be turned off.
