PKI standards for "Public Key Infrastructure". It is based upon "public key" or "assymetric" cryptography. Using this technique, two encryption keys are generated (known as a "public" and "private" key). When the message is encrypted with one key, it can only be decrypted with the other. Thus, you can send a message to someone by encrypting with their public key. Only the recipient can decode the message with the private key.
