DES (Data Encryption Standard) was created by the United States government and IBM to form the standard encryption mechanism for the next 20 years. DES, and its 3-time-encryption triple-DES, forms the basis for most encryption used up to this point. However, DES has a relatively weak 56-bit key. A message encrypted with DES was cracked in less than 24-hours simply be trying all combinations of the key with a machine built for $250,000. For this reason, many people are moving to different encryption algorithms. For example, the AES is intended to replace DES soon.
