Tunneling

advICE :Countermeasures :Firewalls : Tunneling
Getting client applications through firewalls can often be challenging. Classic problems are:
FTP
Normal FTP requires an incoming FTP connection that will be blocked by the firewall. One solution is "stateful inspection" of the control connection to allow these connections through. Also, most browsers support a PASV mode that transfers files through only outgoing connections. However, not all clients (especially command-line ones) support this and many servers still don't support this feature.
rsh
Outgoing 'rsh' has a problem with an incoming connection for stderr.
